Children grow up believing that life is like school, with every question having an answer in the back of the book. Maturity consists in recognizing that life is a continuing series of multiple choice questions with the answers torn out of the back of the book.
-Sydney Harris

TAUGHT
We are taught to live,
we are
taught to feel.
We are taught to conform and conceal.

We are taught so well
what we
ought to feel
that we cannot feel what we feel.
- Piet Hein "Grooks"

The majority of parents feel affection for their children, and this sets limits to the harm they do them. But education authorities have no affection for the children concerned; at best, they are actuated by public spirit, which is directed towards the community as a whole, and not merely towards the children; at worst, they are politicians engaged in squabbles for plums
- Bertrand Russell
